     WORKSHOPS and TUITION  for 2024

Workshops are tailored to suit all abilities.  Working  with small groups of  5 students only to  ensure personal tuition with each student. Workshops begin at 9.30 and finish at 3.45pm.A 2 course lunch is provided  to help make for a really enjoyable arty day out.Refreshments are available throughout the day.

Workshops cover a wide variety of subjects and are very relaxed and informal.  After an introduction over tea & coffee a short pastel demo will be followed by your own practical work.  Catherine is on hand to guide and advise you.

At The Old Granary Studio

These are held at Catherine’s studio in the little village of Skirpenbeck near York .

Group Bookings 

Groups of up to 5 may book a private workshop with their chosen subject  on a date to suit .
These workshops will be held at The Old Granary Studio  with a lunch included.  Please feel free to telephone or email for further information

Private Tuition 

Private tuition is available on a one to one or two to one basis for  students wishing for  more intensive tuition in pastel.  A  minimum of 2 hours to a full day . Please feel free to contact  for more details.

Animals it is the the eye & muzzle. 

Fur & hair can be tricky so this too will be covered.

Ws 1b   Sat .6th January ELEMENTS of HUMAN PORTRAITURE.   £115

       Workshops, Ia & Ib may be taken together.  £220  

Designed to feature the elements of portraiture.  With the human face it is important to

construct the eye, mouth & nose correctly.  The eyes & mouth being the most expressive. 

We will cover skin tones too. 

      ‘Elements’ are an additional aide for students wishing to follow with

      ‘Portraits & ‘Pet & Animal Portraits' workshops

 Working from a photograph or sketch of your choice.  There will be a short demo at the start of the day to show

the skills to learn for painting our animal companions

A look at composition, perspective and various pastel techniques used to create the  ever changing landscapes.

Working from a field sketch or photo image of your choice you will be given lots of information 

as well as inspiration to create one (or several ) amazing pastels at the finish of the workshop.

Celebrate the Spring !  

Demonstration  to start the day and using  the wonderful colour of pastels to celebtate the arrival of our beautiful Spring flowers and to study the foliage that always seems to create problems for my students!

Ws 5  Fri. 29th & Sat 30th  March      HARES & OTHER WILDLIFE  £220

 Still in a Springtime theme.

 Always so popular, our native Brown Hare,  so get to grips with how to layer the fur and work amazing eyes  to create  one of our most loved native wildlife creatures.   Though the workshop is of a 'Hare' theme you may  wish to create a  wildlife animal of  your choice other than a hare.

 By popular demand another 'Animal ' theme to start our 2024  Autumn workshops. 

 Both days will begin with a short demo  with hints, tips & techniques  with  pastels to create an animal from the  wild.

 Again a short Demo prior to our practical work and again working from a field sketch or photo image

of your choice.   How to work  fast flowing,  shallow water or deepstill pools .  Form ripples and reflections  in pastel!

How to achieve a likeness in pastel from a photograph.

We shall cover the proportions and elements of the human face, how  to acheive expression  as well as working too on the  skin colour and tones.

A short demo using vibrant colours in soft pastel to make for an amazing and atmospheric sky .

 Workshops, 9a & 9b may be taken together.  £220

Again a short demo using  in soft pastel to create wild and wonderful waves.  Learn how to use colour & tonal contrasts to create super a seascape!

Snow covered trees  and frosty leaves - my students sometimes find this a little problematic, so time to make it less so. Demo to start, just a short one to demonstrate  techniques. including mark making and choice colours.

Ws 11b  Sat. 7th December  Let it Snow!  £115

Again a short demo prior to practical in the studio .  Lots of hints & tips on markmaking &  choice of pastel colours to create  snow.
